About the league

joeJoe MacDonald Youth Football League (JMYFL) was established in 1993.

The League was named to honour and recognize Constable Joe MacDonald who was killed in the line of duty for his contributions to our community.

JMYFL is an organization dedicated to the youth of the City of Greater Sudbury and strives to have its members achieve high standards of moral development and citizenship. This goal is pursued through participation in amateur football.

JMYFL affords the opportunity for the youth of the Greater City of Sudbury to participate in tackle football. This activity does not only provide the participants (boys and girls) with physical activity, but also instils dedication, teamwork and cooperation to achieve goals both on and off the field.

The League has three divisions:

  • Mini Macs (Ages 8 to 10)
  • Sid Forster Tyke Division (Ages 11 to 12)
  • Phil Smith Sr. Bantam Division (Ages 13 to 15)

The League was instrumental in recognizing the contributions that the late Sid Forster made to the youth of Sudbury by having a monument erected at James Jerome (formerly Lily Creek)  Sports Complex.

Phil Smith Sr. was a major supporter of the league, and contributed tremendously to its success.

The League has become a foundation level in the feeder system that has seen many of its former players continue on to play higher levels of football in high school, the Ontario Varsity League, the Spartans and university teams.

Our  football with teams of 8 players on the field, in addition to other specific rules to promote skill development in its players. Some years may see more players, depending on registration.

All League games are played on weekends at James Jerome (formerly Lily Creek)  Sports Complex from September to November. The finals take place at Queen’s Athletic Field.

A number of businesses and charitable organizations have helped support the League financially over the years with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 and the Kinsmen Club of Sudbury being the major sponsors.

Officials enforce the rules as set out by the Ontario Tackle Football.

JMYFL is a not for profit corporation.

The League is fully insured through Ontario Tackle Football.

The League has had close to 2000 children participating in more than 135,000 playing hours without any significant injuries in the last thirteen years.

The League ensures that players, coaches and officials have access to clinics to improve their abilities.  All JMYFL coaches and assistant coaches are required to submit a clean police check before being allowed on the field. You will recognize an official JMYFL coach by the apparel given by the League.
